KABOOM...my Savage Backfires!

Just got a 97 Savage 650 from a neighbor. It backfires periodically, mostly when you turn the engine off. He has had it back to the dealership three times, yet it's still going on. Obviously the mechanics are stumped. Is there anything I can do to reduce or eliminate this? Gas additive? Something?
